Difference Between Mass and Weight

Mass and weight are commonly confused but are fundamentally different physical quantities. Mass is the amount of matter in an object, while weight is the gravitational force acting on that mass.

Mass vs Weight — Comparison Table

AspectMassWeight
DefinitionAmount of matter in objectForce of gravity on object
TypeScalarVector (directed toward center of gravity)
SI UnitKilogram (kg)Newton (N)
FormulaConstantW = mg
Varies with location?NoYes (depends on g)
Zero gravityRemains sameBecomes zero
Measured byBeam balanceSpring balance

Key Points to Remember

Mass is intrinsic; weight depends on gravitational acceleration
Weight on Moon is ~1/6th of weight on Earth
In space (zero-g), weight = 0 but mass remains unchanged
Mass is measured in kg; weight in Newton (1 kg weight ≈ 9.8 N on Earth)
