Difference Between Scalar and Vector

Scalars and vectors are two types of physical quantities. Scalars have only magnitude, while vectors have both magnitude and direction. This distinction is fundamental to all of physics.

Scalar vs Vector — Comparison Table

AspectScalarVector
DefinitionQuantity with only magnitudeQuantity with magnitude and direction
ExamplesMass, Speed, Energy, TemperatureForce, Velocity, Displacement, Acceleration
AdditionSimple arithmetic additionTriangle law / Parallelogram law
NotationRegular letters (m, T)Arrow notation or bold (F⃗, v)
ComponentsNoneCan be resolved into components
Negative valueSome can be negative (temperature)Direction reverses

Key Points to Remember

Vector addition follows the parallelogram or triangle law, not simple addition
Dot product of two vectors gives a scalar; cross product gives a vector
Work (scalar) = Force (vector) · Displacement (vector)
A vector can be completely described by its components along coordinate axes
